A cross cultural publication conceived and designed by Japanese designer Kayuko Inoue

Beyond Words is a cross cultural publication conceived and designed by Japanese designer Kayuko Inoue as part of her placement project with Charnwood Arts in the summer of 2014.

Kayuko originally conceived the project as a permanent or semi-permanent outdoor display but due to rising cost implications and concerns over safety measures in the selected environment the book was produced as an alternative.

Kayuko's concept was simple. Given just five words how would four British and four Japanese photographers respond.

In her words:

"Words are really important, vital to being able to communicate what you want to say or express. As words communicate, so does photography, including the expression of feelings."

Each photographer was offered five keywords:

Happy, Loneliness, Peace, Playful Mind, Freedom.

Kayak asks, " In 'Beyond Words' what differences and similarities of approach and expression can you find between photographers and their cultural backgrounds?"
