This book, originally created in 2015, depicts a portrait of the village of Hathern, which is located just north of Loughborough in Leicestershire. The book has been created by interns from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan and the text was written by Terry Allen from Charnwood Arts in 2002 for the original People Making Places project. Using a mixture of history, statistical information and photographs taken by the interns (outsiders to the village), the book provides a unique vignette of life in the village past and present.
Amongst other notable historical morsels associated with the village is its notoriety as “Wicked Hathern”. This phrase is used a number of times by magistrates and members of the clergy in the 19th century to describe the people of the village and their misdeeds and more recently inspired local businesses including the ‘Wicked Hathern Brewery.
