WALTON ON THE WOLDS

Walton on Wolds

 

This is a high standing village to the east of the Soar Valley and is the centre of a farming parish. It lies about four miles from Loughborough and most of the houses are grouped around the village green.

BEAUTIFUL LIFE : MEMORY AND NOSTALGIA

Beautiful Life: Memory and Nostalgia was the second major collaboration between curator, artist and academic Ming Turner and Charnwood Arts and involved the creation of a programme of exhibitions and participatory work that took place in the UK and Taiwan. 

 

The exhibitions involved artists from the UK, Taiwan, India, Poland, Pakistan, Philipines, USA and Egypt and took place at the beautiful South Hill Park in Bracknell and Atkin's Gallery in Hinckley, UK and at Pier 2 Art District in Kaohsiung. 

 

HERBERT SCHOFIELD AND LOUGHBOROUGH TECHNICAL INSTITUTE'S INSTRUCTIONAL FACTORY

Loughborough Technical Institute was established by the County Education Committee in 1909 to provide day and evening classes in science, technology and art for local workers.

 

Headed by its principal - Mr S C Laws - and two full-time members of staff, the college was housed in the small block of rooms on the corner of Ashby Road and Greenclose Lane which had previously been a library and administrative offices for Loughborough Corporation.

 

GAMES TIME LOUGHBOROUGH

Games Time was a free, spectacular, live outdoor stage show combining music, video, fireworks, professional dancers and up to 160 members of the local community in each venue. 

 

Games Time took place across the East Midlands over the UK Olympic Games summer of 2012 - the dates were: 

Saturday 9 June - Loughborough, Southfields Park
Saturday 7 July - Northampton, Delapre Abbey Park
Saturday 22 September - Derby, Darley Park

 

JANAM PERFORM 'MACHINE' ' at Fearon Hall

Charnwood Arts were privileged to host a performance and talk from pioneering street group Jana Natya Manch (Janam) from India at Fearon Hall in Loughborough in 2013.

 

Jana Natya Manch (People's Theatre Front; Janam for short, meaning "Birth") is a New Delhi-based amateur theatre company specializing in left-wing street theatre in Hindi. It was founded in 1973 by a group of Delhi's radical theatre amateurs, who sought to take theatre to the people. Theatre personality Safdar Hashmi is the best-known figure associated with the troupe. 

 

'SPELLBOUND' - DIWALI IN LEICESTER 2013

Every Autumn Leicester's Belgrave Road and Cossington Park Recreation Ground come alive with the celebration of the Indian festival of Diwali. In 2013 the production of 'Spellbound' by outdoor performance specialists 'Walk the Plank' brought the age old story of Sita and Rama to life.

 

Re-told through a mixture of shadow puppetry, live shadow performers, pyrotechnics, music, narration and spectacular fire sculptures the company electrified the thousands of people who came to watch. Diwali is also known as Deepavali and the "festival of lights".
